Yakubu Hands Over to Agbamuche as Acting INEC Chairman

Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner in the electoral body, assumes office pending the appointment and confirmation of a substantive chairman.

Yakubu made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

He urged the commissioners and directors of the commission to extend their full support and cooperation to Agbamuche as she leads the commission through the transition period.

Professor Yakubu is leaving office after completing his constitutionally permitted two-term tenure of 10 years as INEC Chairman.

He was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015, six months after Buhari assumed office, and was reappointed for a second term in 2020.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to appoint a new substantive INEC Chairman soon, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
