The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reaffirmed that visa application fees remain non-refundable and non-transferable, despite growing concerns from applicants over denials and processing delays.
In a post on its official X handle on Tuesday, the U.S. Mission said the fees are strictly to cover administrative costs, not the guarantee of a visa.

“Like most countries, U.S. visa fees cover the cost of processing the application, regardless of the outcome. While fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, each application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly,” the embassy stated.
It explained that all applications undergo a fair review process, urging Nigerians to carefully prepare their documents and make use of resources available on its website, ng.usembassy.gov/visas.
The clarification follows repeated complaints from Nigerian applicants, many of whom argue that payments should be refunded in cases of prolonged delays or outright denials.
Visa access to the United States remains one of the most sought-after by Nigerians, with thousands applying annually for study, work, tourist, and immigrant categories.
The embassy stressed that its system is built to ensure fairness, transparency, and security, while noting that the latest advisory is part of its #VisaWiseTravelSmart campaign aimed at educating applicants on U.S. visa procedures.
