A powerful rainstorm swept through Ilase, Ogun State, on Wednesday, leading to the tragic collapse of a school building at Mayigi Community Comprehensive High School, claiming the life of a 14-year-old student, Timothy Amosun.
The Ogun State government confirmed the incident in a statement by Mr. Lekan Adeniran, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The storm also injured five students, two teachers, a food vendor, and her seven-month-old baby. Describing the incident as a “rude shock” and an “unimaginable tragedy,” Governor Abiodun expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family.
“We pray God grants the family of the deceased the strength to endure this irreplaceable loss,” he said.
To support the victims, the governor directed that all medical expenses be covered by the state and ordered that those in critical condition be transferred to specialist hospitals for better treatment.
He also instructed the Commissioner for Education to visit the affected families and assess the damage for the immediate reconstruction of the school.
The community remains in mourning as residents struggle to come to terms with the devastating impact of the storm.
