The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, calling for an immediate end to hostilities and urging both parties to exercise maximum restraint.
In a statement released on Saturday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government strongly condemned Israel’s recent preemptive strike on Iran, describing it as a dangerous move that has worsened tensions in the region.

“The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran that has led to an escalation of hostilities between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel, marked by sustained missile and aerial exchanges across both territories,” the statement read.
Nigeria warned that the ongoing exchange of missile attacks and airstrikes poses a grave risk not only to civilian lives but also to regional stability and global security.
“The continued cycle of retaliation not only endangers civilian lives but threatens to plunge the broader Middle East into further instability, with implications for international security and economic development,” it added.
On Friday, Israel launched a large-scale aerial offensive, striking nearly 100 targets across Iran—including nuclear sites and military bases. The strike reportedly killed several senior Iranian military officials, including General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, and Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Iran has since retaliated with a barrage of ballistic missiles, one of which struck central Tel Aviv, causing massive destruction and casualties. In a televised address, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described Israel’s action as a “declaration of war,” vowing a “bitter and painful” response.
Reacting to the growing conflict, Nigeria called on the United Nations Security Council and the broader international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to bring both countries to the negotiation table.
“As a nation deeply committed to the principles of peaceful coexistence, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria calls on all involved to prioritise dialogue over confrontation,” the statement said.
“The path to lasting peace lies in diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law. Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.”
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting sincere global efforts aimed at restoring calm and urged all stakeholders to avoid further actions that could lead to a broader conflict.
“Military action is not a substitute for negotiation,” the statement concluded, urging all sides to seek diplomatic solutions for lasting peace in the Middle East.
