Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has explained why he and the incumbent Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside other members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a reception ceremony held on Monday at the Cenotaph in Asaba, Okowa said the decision was made in the best interest of Delta State and its people.

“Many may wonder why we took this step, but there comes a time in the history of a people when a change of path becomes necessary for the common good. Our decision was guided by the need to reposition Delta State for greater benefits,” Okowa said.
He noted that their move to the APC was aimed at aligning the state with the federal government to tap into the resources and goodwill available in Abuja.
“It was not about me or the governor. It was about ensuring Delta State is properly connected to Abuja. We are a major contributor to the nation’s wealth, and it is only right that we benefit accordingly.
“I governed for eight years in opposition and did my best, but the state lost a lot. I do not believe Governor Oborevwori should face the same challenge. He is working hard, and he needs all the support he can get from the centre,” Okowa stated.
Describing the move as “bold, strategic, patriotic, and well-intentioned,” the former governor urged party members to embrace unity and work together to strengthen the APC in Delta State.
“We must defend the interest of our state beyond personal ambitions. It is time to embrace one another — both those who have been in the APC and those of us joining now — and work as one family.
“This is the time to stand firm in support of Mr. President and Governor Oborevwori. Together, we will strengthen our political base in Delta and dominate the political space. With this move, there will be no other party in Delta State,” he added.
Okowa, Oborevwori, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State announced their defection to the APC last week.
