There are strong indications that the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on September 26, will serve as a major unifying ground for Nigeria’s top political figures.
Sources confirmed that President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are among key leaders expected to attend the event, alongside several governors, traditional rulers, and members of the political class.

It was learnt that the three political heavyweights have personally congratulated Oba Ladoja on his emergence, while maintaining close contact with him as preparations for the coronation reach their peak.
Former colleagues of the Olubadan-designate in the Senate during the botched Third Republic, including the then Senate President, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, have also indicated their readiness to converge on Ibadan for the historic ceremony.
Top monarchs across the country are equally expected, with the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, confirmed to attend. Sources said Ladoja’s unique ties to Ilorin, having been born in Gambari village in 1944 while his mother was on a trading trip made the Emir’s presence symbolic. Reports even suggest that a billboard in Ladoja’s honour has been mounted in Ilorin.
“All governors from the six South-West states are also expected. What makes this coronation special is that Oba Ladoja is not only a traditional ruler but also a former governor and senator, which is why the political class will turn out in huge numbers,” one source disclosed.
It was further gathered that Mr Peter Obi plans a courtesy visit to Oba Ladoja ahead of the coronation, while preparations for the reopening of the Ibadan Airport closed since March have been fast-tracked to accommodate dignitaries.
