The Senate will today (Wednesday) screen and possibly confirm the newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
President Tinubu, in a letter read at Tuesday’s plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, urged lawmakers to give swift and thorough consideration to the nominees.
The President nominated Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff; Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff; and Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Akpabio directed the request to the Committee of the Whole for screening and possible confirmation, which is scheduled to take place today.
The move follows a closed-door meeting President Tinubu held with the new service chiefs on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja — his first official interaction with the nation’s top military leadership since last week’s major reshuffle.
The Presidency had earlier described the shake-up as part of the administration’s renewed commitment to reposition and fortify Nigeria’s security framework.
President Tinubu also commended the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and other retired officers for their patriotic service and commitment to national security.
