The Senate on Thursday confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his successful screening and clearance by relevant security agencies.
The confirmation came after a voice vote conducted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary, shortly after the nominee responded to questions from lawmakers on his vision for credible elections and institutional reforms within the electoral body.

Screening and Clearance
Professor Amupitan, who arrived at the National Assembly complex earlier in the day, was accompanied to the Senate chamber by Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and several dignitaries.
At about 12:50 p.m., he was ushered into the Red Chamber by the Presidential Adviser on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Abubakar Lado, after the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), moved a motion to suspend Order 12 to allow his entry — a motion seconded by the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South).
Welcoming the nominee and his entourage, Senate President Akpabio commended their presence and informed lawmakers that the candidate had been cleared by the National Security Adviser’s office, as well as the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, which confirmed he had no criminal record.
Commitment to Credible Elections
During the screening, Amupitan outlined his plans to strengthen public trust in the electoral process, ensure transparency in election management, and deepen the adoption of technology to enhance efficiency and credibility.
He also emphasized his commitment to upholding the independence of INEC and ensuring that the commission operates as a truly impartial institution guided by law and integrity.
Background
Professor Amupitan, a senior academic and legal scholar, is widely regarded for his expertise in constitutional law and governance. His appointment follows the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who had served two terms.
With the Senate’s confirmation, Amupitan is expected to assume office immediately, subject to formal swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
