Ekiti 2026: Ikere Royal Council Dissolves Elders Group Over Political Conduct

The council made the declaration during a meeting held at the Ogoga’s palace in Ikere. It reaffirmed its commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket of Oyebanji and Afuye.

The council distanced itself from reports that some Ikere leaders attended rallies or meetings on behalf of the community for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede. It stated that no individual was authorised to represent Ikere at any political gathering organised by the PDP or its candidate.

“Reports suggesting that some Ikere leaders attended PDP rallies or meetings on behalf of the community are misleading and should be disregarded,” the council said.

The Ogoga-in-Council cited federal appointments secured by Ikere indigenes under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing the development as inclusive and commendable. It also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Ikere-Ilawe Road, and improvements in the healthcare and education sectors as evidence of the current government’s developmental strides.

The council expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his support and goodwill towards Ekiti State.

It further commended Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, describing her as a proud daughter and worthy representative of Ikere Kingdom.

On the zoning of the House of Representatives seat, the council clarified that its recent position was non-partisan and aimed at ensuring fairness to Ikere Constituency 1, not driven by political considerations.

The council expressed concern over the activities of some individuals allegedly operating under the name of the Ikere Council of Elders for political purposes. It warned that such actions could tarnish the image and unity of Ikere Kingdom.

Consequently, the Ogoga-in-Council announced the suspension of the Ikere Council of Elders until after the forthcoming election to prevent misrepresentation of political positions and avoid a breakdown of order in the town.

The council said it deliberated on the matter and found the actions of the individuals to be contrary to the purpose for which the elders’ body was established. It noted that the Ikere Elders Council was created to promote unity and development but had deviated from its mandate.

The statement was signed by the Ogoga of Ikere, Oba Dr. Samuel Adejimi Adu Alagbado, alongside High Chief Ayeni Olajide (Ologotun Ikere), High Chief Olufemi Babatola (Sapetu Ikere), Chief James Alonge (Sao Ikere), High Chief Kayode Omodara, and the Asoju Oba of Ikere Kingdom, Chief Akin Afuye.
