Dating Is Getting Too Expensive for Many Young Adults in U.S., Survey Shows

The study, released this week, found that 53% of adults aged 18-34 have cut back on dates in the past year due to money concerns. About 1 in 4 said they’ve avoided dating altogether because of the expense.

The average date now costs $85-$130 in major U.S. cities when including dinner, drinks, and transport, the report said.

Respondents reported shifting to cheaper alternatives: coffee walks, free museum days, cooking at home, and “hangout dates” instead of formal dinners. Dating apps also noted a rise in users listing “low-cost first date” preferences.

Financial experts quoted in the survey said dating costs are compounding broader affordability stress for Gen Z and younger millennials, who already face higher housing and debt burdens than previous generations at the same age.

Despite the squeeze, 68% of young adults said they still value in-person dating over online-only connections, but are setting clearer budgets and expectations earlier.
