Court Remands Portable in Prison Over Defamation Case

Portable was arraigned on Monday over charges bordering on defamation of character, filed against him by popular Fuji musician, Okunola Saheed, popularly known as Saheed Osupa.

The court granted the singer bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. However, the conditions were described as stringent. One of the sureties must be a property owner within a Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Ilorin with a valid Certificate of Occupancy, while the second must be either the Chairman or Secretary of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).

The case, registered under FIR 117(1) CPC, was initiated by the State Intelligence Department of the Kwara State Police Command following a petition filed by Osupa on March 21, 2025.

The petition accused Portable of defaming the veteran musician through a live Instagram broadcast, where he allegedly made damaging remarks, accusing Osupa of sabotaging his career out of jealousy.

In the video, Portable was quoted as saying, “This man dey try bring down my shine! He be like person wey dey chop snail with shell—him no get sense. Osupa carry tortoise for stomach. When Apple Music and Spotify want to drop money for me, na him remove my song from the platform, make I no see money.”

Osupa alleged that the statements were not only defamatory but also capable of inciting public hatred and disrupting peace.

Confirming the arrest, spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the singer was apprehended in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at about 7:25 p.m., and was taken to Ilorin for further investigation.

“In view of the weight of these allegations and the supporting evidence presented, the command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin,” the statement said.

The command listed the offences against Portable to include criminal defamation, threats to life, incitement, character assassination, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and use of offensive language.

Ejire-Adeyemi added that Portable gave his statement in the presence of legal representatives from both parties, and the matter has been formally charged to court.
