ASUU Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to FG, Threatens Fresh Strike

The decision was reached at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Sunday at the University of Abuja.

In a strike notice personally signed by the National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, and released to journalists on Monday, the union said the ultimatum, which took effect on Sept. 28, will precede a two-week warning strike before escalating into a total and indefinite shutdown of public universities if the government fails to act.

ASUU’s demands include:
1. Re-negotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement.
2. Sustainable funding of public universities.
3. Revitalisation of universities.
4. An end to alleged victimisation of ASUU members in LASU, KSU (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and FUTO.
5. Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears.
6. Settlement of promotion arrears spanning over four years.
7. Remittance of outstanding third-party deductions.

“At the NEC meeting held on September 28, 2025, the union decried the neglect of the university system and the government’s consistent refusal to meet its demands,” Piwuna said.

“If at the end of the ultimatum the government fails to act, the union may have no option but to first embark on a two-week warning strike, and thereafter, a total and indefinite strike,” he added.

It would be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education recently set up a committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s proposals. However, its recommendations have not yet been made public.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had earlier appealed to ASUU to be patient, stressing that there was no need to embark on strike in the middle of ongoing talks.
