Rivers State is not just another state in Nigeria; it ranks third in economic and strategic importance, following Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory. Its value lies in its vast oil resources, thriving commercial activities, large population, and significant contributions to national economic growth.
Port Harcourt, the state capital, is one of Nigeria’s most developed cities. Beyond its economic strength, Rivers State is a melting pot of cultures, home to people from all parts of the country, much like Lagos and Abuja.
Today, however, Rivers State is in the spotlight not for progress, but for a deepening political crisis that threatens its peace and stability.
The unfolding chaos is a direct result of the ongoing power struggle between political gladiators and leaders.
At the center of this crisis is Barrister Nyesom Wike, the former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The burning question is: how can one man hold an entire state hostage? Why should the people of Rivers suffer for the political ambitions and disagreements between Wike and his former ally, Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara?
Tomorrow, Monday, March 3rd, could mark the beginning of unprecedented political violence. This one that may surpass anything witnessed in Nigeria’s recent history. The “Wild Wild West” crisis of the 1960s in the Southwest may be small in comparison.
Wike’s supporters and political beneficiaries are mobilizing across all local government areas, asserting their presence. The 27 House of Assembly members who defected from the PDP to the APC are now returning, emboldened by last Friday’s Supreme Court ruling.
On the other side, Governor Fubara’s supporters are also gearing up for a showdown, determined to defend what remains of their political positions and influence.
Rivers State stands on the brink of chaos. In the midst of this looming crisis, where are the security agencies? Where are the state’s leaders? Where is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu? Will Nigeria stand by and watch as Rivers descends into bloodshed, arson, and destruction?
Nigerians, arise! Let us act now to prevent Rivers from boiling over.
