Akogun Abayomi Olumide’s Health Deteriorates in Detention, Family Cries Out

According to his son, Akogun Olumide Babatunde, and younger wife, Mrs Morenike Akogun Abayomi, Olumide’s health is deteriorating due to diabetes and lack of access to medical treatment.

The case against Olumide, which included charges of attempted robbery, robbery, and rape, was struck out by Justice Omotosho on February 5, 2026. However, he remains in custody at the Correctional Service facility in Ekiti State.

The family alleges that the State government is working to keep Olumide detained through an illegal court order, citing a national embarrassment and indictment on the judiciary.

Reacting, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, SAN, stated that Olumide was not released due to a pending matter at the Federal High Court related to Unlawful Possession of Cannabis Sativa.

Apata explained that the prosecution had requested an adjournment, but the court struck out the case, and Olumide was taken back to the Correctional Centre after a motion for relisting was filed.

The Ekiti State Government denies any involvement in Olumide’s remand, saying it has no hand in his detention.

The family is calling for support from prominent figures, including the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, and former Governors of Ekiti State, to secure Olumide’s release.
