The Management of the School of Postgraduate Studies, (SPGS), Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has refuted the allegation that it has been making obnoxious demands from graduate students during their thesis defense. M.SC
A controversial news report went viral on the social media on Monday that the SPGS was allegedly making obnoxious demands from students during their M.SC thesis defense.
The report reads in part:
“With love from FEDERAL UNIVERSITY, OYE EKITI! These items are to be bought by EACH of the Post Graduate students of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) just to defend their project. That’s apart from paying N80k for Project Defense. When it is not Mechanic or Tailoring Apprenticeship Freedom.”
It therefore listed some items such as drinks and edibles as being allegedly demanded for the M.SC defense. But in a swift reaction from the SPGS Management through a press release made available to newsmen on Tuesday and signed by Dean, FUOYE SPGS, Prof. Raphael A.Omolehin, the University’s School of Post Graduate Studies denied making such demands.
While clarifying that students may choose to willingly offer such unrequested items to their departments, the Dean however, condemned the alleged demand for such items by any member of staff of the University.
The press statement which was entitled “ PRESS RELEASE ON THE ACCLAIMED DEMAND FOR COMPULSORY ENTERTAINMENT DURING MSC PROJECT DEFENSE”, reads in part:”
The Management of the School of Postgraduate Studies hereby expresses its displeasure and outrightly condemns the act of making obnoxious demands of food items from students defending their theses. Though, it is universally allowed for willing and able students to provide refreshment during thesis defense, it should never be made compulsory at all.
“While condemning an unethical manner of making it a must, it should be strongly noted that the postgraduate school under the leadership of Professor Raphael A. Omolehin will never tolerate such unethical request from any of the Departments if found to be true.
“ To this effect, the Management of the School of Postgraduate Studies hereby distance itself from this unscholarly act. It should be noted that henceforth, no Department should be involved in taking unnecessary undue advantage of our postgraduate students while also encouraging our postgraduate students to report such to the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies or the undersigned.
“Please, be rest assured that the interest of our students for academic excellence and timely completion of programmes within the approved period is the watchword of the authorities of the University under the leadership of our able Vice- Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, the entire University Management and the Board, School of postgraduate studies. “
