GWR Confirms Hilda Baci’s World Record for Largest Serving Jollof Rice

The Guinness World Records, in a statement on Monday, confirmed that Hilda, in collaboration with Gino Nigeria, prepared 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) of jollof rice during an eight-hour open cooking session held on Friday at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The feat, tagged “Largest Serving of Nigerian-Style Jollof Rice”, drew hundreds of spectators and featured live performances.

Hilda, whose real name is Hilda Bassey, revealed that the record-breaking dish was made with 4,000 kg of washed basmati rice, 164 kg of fresh goat meat, 220 kg of Gino Asun & Peppered Chicken Cubes, and 600 kg of her signature jollof pepper mix. The cooking required 1,200 kg of gas and produced about 16,600 plates of rice.

“It took nine hours of fire, passion and teamwork,” she said, adding that she followed strict Guinness World Records rules on food distribution to ensure that none of it went to waste.

Sharing her excitement, Hilda wrote: “I didn’t realise it would be this hard — it has been a real challenge. It took a lot of hard work, but achieving the record is truly satisfying. This record also belongs to the people of Nigeria, because they all contributed to its success.”

The Akwa Ibom-born chef first gained global attention in May 2023 when she set the record for the longest cooking marathon, clocking 93 hours and 11 minutes in Lekki, Lagos. That record has since been surpassed, but her latest achievement has reignited pride in Nigeria’s long-standing jollof rivalry with Ghana.
