Why I converted to Islam – Actress Debbie Shokoya

The actress, who was born into a Christian family, said her choice was not influenced by external pressure but by conviction, adding that religion should unite rather than divide.

“My relationship with God is what matters the most and how I treat my fellow human,” she wrote on Instagram. “Christianity by birth, Muslim by marriage… God is love! Humanity always.”

Shokoya explained that she does not see faith as a battle of superiority but as a path to peace, love and compassion. She also dismissed claims by some friends who accused her husband of hypnotising her, insisting her belief was rooted in personal comfort and connection with God.

“It’s not a war, it’s not a competition. Neither is it a debate,” she wrote. “Preach love and act in love first. No matter the religion, no matter the colour, no matter the tribe—love comes first because God is love.”

The actress urged Nigerians to focus on humanity above religious labels, noting that tolerance and compassion remain the foundation of true worship.
