Operatives of the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba Vigilante Group, who were captured in a viral video assaulting a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Jennifer Elobor, have been arrested.
The incident, which sparked outrage nationwide, showed the corps member being beaten, stripped and humiliated by armed vigilantes who had stormed a corps lodge, accusing the occupants of being internet fraudsters despite presenting their NYSC identity cards and uniforms.
Jennifer was severely assaulted in the attack, leaving her traumatised and bloodied.
Confirming the arrest, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, said on Tuesday that the culprits have been detained.
Speaking on Channels Television, Emeakayi explained that the incident happened during a joint security operation when operatives were pursuing suspected cultists riding motorcycles.
“The operatives were on the trail of some suspected cultists when they pursued them into a compound. In the process of searching the houses in line with their mandate, the unfortunate incident involving the corps member occurred,” he said.
He, however, admitted that while the security officers were operating within their mandate, their conduct in the treatment of the corps member was “unacceptable.”
The Anambra State Government has assured that investigations are ongoing and those found culpable will face disciplinary measures.
