Panic has gripped the Okeyimi Health Centre in Ado Ekiti following the mysterious disappearance of a newborn baby, barely 24 hours after birth.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, sparked chaos within the hospital as healthcare workers reportedly discovered the baby missing while making their routine checks.
The development left the baby’s mother, family members, hospital staff, and other patients in shock and confusion.
Sources at the facility said that the mother and several staff members, including a security guard, have been taken into custody for questioning to aid preliminary investigations.
Efforts to get an official comment from the hospital management were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Ekiti State Command, SP Sunday Abutu, said four suspects had so far been arrested in connection with the case.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Eribo, had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case and ensure a thorough investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the SCID to fully investigate the case and recover the missing baby. As we speak, four suspects are in custody and are already providing useful information to aid our investigation,” Abutu said.
The police spokesperson assured the public that no effort would be spared in getting to the root of the incident and bringing all culprits to justice.
The mysterious disappearance has heightened fears among residents over security in medical facilities, prompting calls for improved surveillance and accountability in health institutions across the state.
