WAFCON Victory: Tinubu Honours Super Falcons with National Awards, $100,000, Houses

While receiving the team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, Tinubu awarded each player the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), in recognition of their outstanding performance.

In addition to the honours, the President announced a monetary reward of $100,000 in naira equivalent for each of the 24 players, and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew.

The team and officials will also receive three-bedroom apartments each at the Renewed Hope Estate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

President Tinubu commended the players for their fighting spirit, sportsmanship, and resilience. He described their comeback win as a reflection of Nigeria’s determination and never-give-up attitude.

The Super Falcons had stunned hosts Morocco with a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday to clinch Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title. Goal scorers in the final were Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini.

In a further show of appreciation, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) also pledged N10 million each to all the players.

The gesture has been widely applauded as a significant morale boost for women’s football in Nigeria.
