Tinubu Hails Two Nigerians Elected as Mayors in London

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President praised both mayors for demonstrating the values of integrity, hard work, and dedication to public service.

“On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I urge you to continue giving your best in your new roles as first citizens of Barking and Dagenham and Islington. Your achievements are a source of inspiration to millions of young Nigerians at home and abroad,” Tinubu said.

Opeyemi Bright Makes History

At just 29, Opeyemi Bright made history by becoming the youngest-ever Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham. Her political journey began in 2018 when she was elected as the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at the age of 22. Her appointment as mayor crowns seven years of committed service to her community.

Celebrating the milestone on social media, Bright wrote: “An unforgettable day as I was officially inaugurated as the Mayor of Barking and Dagenham. When you begin your journey with God at the centre, every step is covered.”

She added that she would be stepping away from her corporate career for a year to serve her community, vowing to be a “present and visible” leader focused on uplifting every corner of the borough.

Jason Jackson Becomes Islington’s First Nigerian-Born Mayor

Jason Jackson also marked a major milestone, becoming the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough was created in 1900. Elected as a councillor in 2022, Jackson quickly rose to become Chair of the Homes and Communities Committee in 2023 before his elevation to mayor.

In a heartfelt message shared online, Jackson said: “From a little village in Nigeria to Islington’s first citizen, this is more than a personal milestone. It’s a reminder that with faith, community, and determination, no dream is too distant.”

He pledged to focus on community development, youth empowerment, and local business support during his tenure.

Outpouring of Support

The two mayors have received widespread congratulations from Nigerians at home and abroad, with many hailing their achievements as a positive reflection of Nigeria’s global image and potential.

President Tinubu expressed optimism that their successes would further strengthen Nigeria-UK relations and continue to inspire young Nigerians around the world.
