The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to increase the retirement age for all civil servants to 65 years or 40 years of service.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made this demand on Thursday during the May Day celebration held at Eagle Square in Abuja.
According to Ajaero, the current policy which allows only teachers, health workers, and judicial officers to retire at 65 or after 40 years of service should be extended to cover all categories of public servants.
“It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges to all public servants,” Ajaero said.
He recalled that the Congress had in 2023 vowed to engage with President Bola Tinubu to push for a broader implementation of the policy.
Teachers across the country are already benefiting from the extended retirement age, following the signing of the relevant law by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
