The Ekiti State Government has condemned the attack on Eda Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area, describing it as heinous and unacceptable and pledging to rescue abducted persons and bring perpetrators to justice.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, the government extended condolences to families of victims and said it “remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property across the state.”
Immediate Security Response
Following the incident, the state deployed a high-powered security delegation led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, rtd., to coordinate operations in the community.
The delegation is working with the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Amotekun Corps, local vigilante groups, and other security agencies.
The government also ordered the immediate deployment of the 148 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, alongside its Commanding Officer, to the area. Full-scale surveillance operations have been activated to monitor the environment, track suspects, and prevent further breaches.
“Security operatives remain on ground and are actively engaged in intensive search and rescue operations aimed at securing the safe return of all abducted persons,” the statement said.
Vigilance in Forest Zones
Preliminary reports indicated that the affected church is located close to a forested area. The government said this “underscores the need for heightened vigilance in such locations.”
Residents were advised to remain calm, law-abiding, and security conscious. The government specifically urged caution with late-night activities, including vigils, especially in border communities and areas adjoining forests.
Conveners of vigils and similar gatherings were advised to notify security agencies in advance to ensure adequate protection.
Call for Public Cooperation
The statement encouraged citizens to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing operations.
“The Ekiti State Government reiterates its unwavering commitment to protecting all residents and ensuring that those responsible for this reprehensible act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,” Olatunbosun said.
