Behind viral celebrity updates on X and TikTok is a workforce of mostly teens and young adults pulling all-nighters for free.
Fan page admins describe scheduling posts across time zones, monitoring paparazzi drops at 3am, and translating content in real time all while juggling school or jobs. Many report burnout, sleep deprivation, and harassment from rival fanbases.

“People think it’s just posting photos,” one admin running a K-pop update account with 400k followers said.
“It’s content strategy, fact-checking, crisis PR, and community moderation. It’s a full-time job with no pay and no off switch.”
Platforms profit from the engagement, but admins say they get little protection or recognition for driving millions of impressions daily.
