Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He confirmed the move in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kano, stressing that his decision was based on the interests of his constituents.

“Yes, it is true. The rumours regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” Sumaila stated.
Sumaila, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly (House of Reps) Matters, won his senatorial seat in the 2023 elections under the NNPP platform.
He noted that joining the APC would allow him better serve the people of Kano South.
His defection follows his recent suspension by the Hashimu Dungurawa-led faction of the NNPP in Kano over alleged anti-party activities—allegations he described as baseless.
Other lawmakers who have faced similar suspensions for associating with the APC include Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya), Ali Madakin Gini (Dala), and Sani Abdullahi Rogo (Rogo/Karaye).
