US Clarifies Visa Expiry Rules For Nigerians, Urges Compliance

In a travel advisory, the embassy clarified that it is the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the port of entry who determines the actual length of stay upon arrival.

“The length of time an international visitor is allowed to stay in the United States is determined by the CBP officer upon arrival, NOT your visa expiration date,” the advisory stated.

Travellers were urged to check their “Admit Until Date” by visiting i94.cbp.dhs.gov to avoid overstaying.

“A U.S. visa only grants you permission to approach a port of entry and request to enter. It does not determine how long you can remain,” the embassy clarified.

The advisory aims to prevent common mistakes that lead to unintentional overstays, which could result in sanctions or denial of future entry into the U.S.
