UK Tightens Security As Tinubu Begins State Visit To Windsor

The Nigerian leader is expected to arrive on Wednesday, March 18, alongside the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for an official reception to be hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle.
In a statement posted on its website, Thames Valley Police confirmed that it is coordinating security arrangements with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household and other partners to ensure a safe and orderly event.

According to the police authority, the permanent airspace restrictions already in place over Windsor Castle will be extended on March 18 from 7 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. as part of the security plan for the visit.

Speaking on the preparations, Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the Joint Operations Unit said the temporary airspace control forms one element of a wider security framework for the high-profile diplomatic engagement.

Hall explained that the police force has extensive experience managing royal ceremonies and official visits in Windsor, noting that detailed planning had been carried out to ensure the event proceeds without disruption.

He warned that anyone who violates the flight restrictions would be committing an offence under the Air Navigation Order and could face arrest.

The security operation will also include officers with specialised skills such as search teams, mounted patrol units, road policing personnel and armed response officers.

In addition, neighbourhood policing teams and officers working under Project Servator will be deployed across the town to interact with residents and visitors during the visit.

Authorities also disclosed that surveillance systems, including Windsor’s extensive closed-circuit television network and hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, would be used alongside other undisclosed security arrangements.

Hall appealed to members of the public to remain alert and cooperate with security officials by reporting any suspicious behaviour during the visit.

He advised residents to contact emergency services by calling 101 or approaching officers on duty, while urgent threats should be reported through the emergency number 999.
Meanwhile, motorists have been advised to expect traffic disruptions as several roads and parking areas around Windsor will be closed from Tuesday, March 17, ahead of the presidential visit.

Thames Valley Police added that the enforcement of the flight restrictions would be carried out in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services.

Individuals or organisations with legitimate reasons to operate drones during the restricted period have been directed to submit requests to the police through the designated email channel.
