Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Justice Oyewole Kayode as Supreme Court Justice

The request was conveyed in a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Tuesday.

In the letter, Tinubu said the nomination was made pursuant to Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), expressing confidence that the Senate would consider and confirm the appointment promptly.

Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening and a report.

Justice Oyewole’s nomination followed a recommendation by the National Judicial Council at its 110th meeting held on January 13, 2026, where he was listed among candidates approved for appointment to various judicial offices nationwide.

Justice Oyewole was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State on May 24, 2001, where he served in several divisions before his elevation to the Court of Appeal on March 3, 2014.

He has since served in the Makurdi, Calabar, Enugu and Abuja divisions of the Court of Appeal, and is currently the Presiding Justice of the Enugu Division.
