Saraki Slams Okowa’s Defection to APC, Says It’s Sign of Collapsing Political Values

Okowa’s defection, which took place on Monday alongside his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, and other top Delta officials, has continued to generate reactions across the political landscape.

In a statement on Tuesday, Saraki described the development as “unbecoming and shocking,” especially coming from someone who ran on the PDP ticket in the last general elections.

He said, “It is unprecedented for a running mate of a major opposition candidate to jump ship and join the ruling party barely two years after the election. No excuse should be made to justify such a move — not even claims of political pressure.”

Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State, lamented the state of Nigeria’s political values, saying the defection is a reflection of how low the country’s political culture has sunk.

“These developments show why we must shift focus from individuals and start building strong democratic institutions,” he said.

Despite the blow to the party in Delta State, Saraki insisted that the PDP remains strong and capable of staging a comeback in future elections, regardless of the number of governors under its umbrella.

He urged party members not to be discouraged, stressing that democracy thrives on viable opposition and real political alternatives.

“The defection should not demoralise PDP supporters. We are still here, and we are committed to rebuilding the party. Those who want to leave should leave now so we can know where we stand and move forward,” Saraki said.

He cautioned against creating a one-party state, describing it as dangerous for Nigeria’s diverse makeup, and warned that the absence of credible alternatives would only breed hopelessness among citizens.

According to him, “Sustaining democracy is a long-term effort. It’s not a knockout contest but a marathon. PDP’s journey is far from over. We must stay focused, stay united, and keep working.”

Saraki also advised party members to avoid blaming the ruling APC for the PDP’s internal challenges, urging them instead to take responsibility and use the situation as an opportunity to reposition the party.

He concluded by calling on loyal members to remain steadfast, reiterating that PDP is undergoing a rebirth and remains a viable platform for the future.
