The National Police Council has ratified the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, paving the way for his name to be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier named Disu as acting IGP on Feb. 25, 2026, following the resignation of former police chief, Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement issued at the time by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president said a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council would be convened to formally consider Disu’s nomination before transmitting it to the Senate for legislative approval.
Disu officially assumed duties as acting IGP last Wednesday prior to his confirmation by the council.
Before his elevation, he served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG in the previous year after holding several strategic commands.
Earlier in his career, Disu worked as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and was later redeployed to Abuja as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory.
He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and previously headed the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, a unit once led by Abba Kyari.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. Over the years, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State; Ikare and Owo in Ondo State; as well as Elimbu and Elelenwo in Rivers State.
He also handled Special Anti-Robbery Squad and anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers State, and at different times commanded SARS units in Ondo, Oyo and Rivers states. In addition, he served as second-in-command of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers.
