A viral video showing students of Unity Secondary School, Asaba, sitting for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at night using torchlights has stirred public anger and drawn the attention of the Federal Ministry of Education.
In the viral footage, the candidates are seen writing their exams in near total darkness, sparking widespread condemnation. Reacting to the development, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the situation as “totally unacceptable.”
Dr. Alausa, through a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, expressed deep disappointment and criticised the Delta State Ministry of Education for allowing such a situation.
“The ministry is aware of the viral video showing students writing exams in an inappropriate environment. It is unfortunate that this occurred under the watch of the state’s education authorities,” Alausa said.
He assured Nigerians that a thorough investigation involving the Federal Ministry of Education, the Delta State Government, and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has commenced.
“The findings of the probe will be made public, and steps will be taken to ensure such embarrassment does not repeat itself,” he stated.
Dr. Alausa also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing conducive learning environments and ensuring the welfare of students across the country.
The incident has sparked serious concerns over the state of infrastructure in public schools, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and urgent intervention to prevent a recurrence.
