Ekiti Govt Sets March 31 Deadline for Safe Transportation of Construction Materials

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, issued the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting with construction companies, the Union of Tippers, Suppliers and Quarry Employers of Nigeria (Ekiti State Chapter), and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ado-Ekiti.

Addressing the stakeholders, Aluko-Ajisafe expressed concern over the hazards caused by the indiscriminate transportation and offloading of sand, gravel, laterite and granite, noting that uncovered conveyance leads to spillage, road damage, blocked drainages and road accidents, thereby endangering lives and property.

She added that such practices impose additional financial burdens on the state through frequent road repairs and debris removal.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Sunday Omoya welcomed the stakeholders and enjoined them to cooperate with the state government to improve environmental safety and the health of our people.

Reacting on behalf of the unions, Mr. Akinluyi Kayode of the NURTW appealed for a grace period to enable proper sensitization of drivers, while Mr. Lawrence Ojo Asamo requested an official circular from the Ministry to strengthen compliance.

Representing the construction companies, Mr. Adejobi Adeolu of Leadgate Global Construction disclosed that his firm had already commenced internal enforcement of the directive and called for wider sensitization to cover companies and clients outside Ado-Ekiti.

In her response, the Commissioner announced a two-month grace period ending 31st March, after which full enforcement and sanctions would commence. She assured stakeholders of wide publicity and official communication by the Ministry.

Resolutions reached include mandatory covering of construction materials with tarpaulin during transit, prompt cleanup of any spillage on the road, and a ban on indiscriminate roadside offloading of construction materials.

The Ekiti State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting public health, preserving road infrastructure and ensuring a safe and clean environment for all residents.
