eBay employees learned of GameStop’s $55.5 billion takeover offer from news alerts Monday morning, with no prior all-hands or internal memo, sources said.
The bid from the video-game retailer left staff at the 29-year-old marketplace “shocked and confused,” one senior engineer said. Slack channels lit up with questions about culture fit, layoffs, and whether “stonk” memes would become HR policy.

CEO Jamie Iannone told staff in a brief note: “We remain focused on our customers. The board will assess any proposal.” eBay has 11,600 employees globally. GameStop has aggressively cut costs since 2021.
