The Founder, Tourism and More Inc, America, Dr. Peter Tarlow, has described Tourism as a cornerstone of the world economy, generating over three trillion dollars in gross domestic product.
The tourism expert made this known during the webinar organised recently by the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, Ekiti State Chapter with the theme ” “Tourism and Peace: Building Bridges and Fostering Understanding in Ekiti State”, to mark the 2024 World Tourism Day.
According to him, “it doesn’t only foster economic peace through job creation and employment, but also serves as a bridge for cultural understanding and mutual respect.”
Tarlow who was a keynote speaker at the event noted that Africa boasts of geological wonders and unparalleled rich cultural diversity with over three thousand different cultures and languages. Adding that these assets can be harnessed in Ekiti State.
Also, another keynote speaker at the event, the Chairman, House Committee on Culture and Tourism, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Kareem Agunbiade, underscored the necessity of investing in the security and safety of tourists saying Africans must prioritize the safety of visitors and the preservation of their sites to ensure sustainable economic growth.
“Honesty and integrity within the tourism industry are essential to maintaining trust and promoting a safe environment for all”. Hon. Agunbiade added.
The webinar which equally featured panel discussion had in attendance the esteemed personalities like; The Chief Executive Officer, Agbo – Veterinary & Environmental Consult, Dr. Babajide Agboola, Chief Executive Officer, CEO Global Anago Adventures Ltd, Amb. Anago Osho, Chief Executive Officer, Topaz Travels & Tours Ltd, Mrs. Susan Akporaiye and a lecturer at the Department of Tourism Studies, Ekiti State University, Mr. Abiodun Ojo, as Dr. Babajide Agboola highlighted the impact of community-based tourism stating that local tourism promotes cultural preservation and peace by engaging communities directly, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their heritage.
On her part, Mrs. Susan Akporaiye emphasized the importance of educating local communities. She pointed out that, empowering local people with knowledge to protect their resources ensures the sustainability of tourism. “When communities understand the value of their natural and cultural assets, they are more committed to preserving them.” She maintained.
The panelists advocated for education, increased knowledge sharing and the implementation of policies that encourage transborder tourism activities. “Understanding and respecting diverse beliefs, even when they differ from our own, is fundamental to fostering peace.” They said.
Mrs Susan cited the need for mutual respect among diverse groups such as Fulani and Zulu people. While Dr. Babajide was of the opinion that the Policy makers should establish frameworks that support cross-border tourism to ensure that regional riches are promoted collectively for the benefit of all.
In her own remarks, the Chairman, Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria in the State, Dr. Abigail Olagbaye who appreciated the speakers outlined the fundamental pillars for achieving peace through tourism which amongst others include: Community growth, development and sustainability, familiarization trips, and tourism education.
Olagbaye affirmed that these elements are crucial for embedding the peace concept within the tourism strategies.
As Ekiti ATPN is dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism practices, fostering economic growth, and enhancing cultural understanding within the State through events and community engagements, the event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and community stakeholders to explore the pivotal role of tourism in promoting peace and economic growth within Ekiti State and beyond as ATPN aims to position Ekiti as a premier tourist destination that contributes to peace and prosperity.

The event which was graced by the Director-General of the Bureau of Tourism, Ambassador Wale Ojo-Lanre, alongside the executive members of the ATPN, dignitaries and stakeholders, emphasized its role in fostering peace, community spirit, and a deeper appreciation of Ekiti’s rich cultural tapestry as the collaboration between the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism and ATPN Ekiti State Chapter underscored a unified commitment to preserving and promoting Ekiti’s historical treasures for future generations.
