The aftermath of the political turmoil that rocked Rivers State on the 30th of October has given rise to significant concerns among the state’s residents and the Nigerian populace at large.
We Ijaw Professional Youth Forum are deeply troubled by the early timing of these political developments and the emerging trend of godfatherism in Nigerian politics. The question raised is, how can an impeachment motion be initiated against a governor within a mere five months just because he doesn’t align with certain self-serving interests?
Statement consigned by the Chairman of the forum, Dickson S. Williams and the Secretary,
Blessing Oze, says there have been persistent unverified speculations, such as Barrister Wike demanding a substantial 25% of the state’s monthly allocation for personal purposes. If these claims hold any truth, our democratic values stand tarnished, and ordinary citizens should not anticipate any dividends.
Now is the time for principled leaders and individuals of integrity to step forward and condemn these dishonorable actions. Barrister Wike must not hold the people of Rivers State hostage, nor should he manipulate the machinery of government for his personal gain.
We call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assert influence over his Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and urge him to prevent further harm to the federal government’s image.
These developments are disconcerting for our state, and we urge all stakeholders to safeguard the sanctity of democratic principles and the well-being of our citizens.
