Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to step down if it would bring peace to Ukraine, even suggesting his resignation could be exchanged for the country’s long-sought NATO membership.
Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv on Sunday, Zelensky also stressed the need for a stronger partnership with the United States, urging former US President Donald Trump to be more than just a mediator between Ukraine and Russia.
“I really want it to be more than just mediation… that’s not enough,” he said.
US-Ukraine Security and Resources Deal Nearing Agreement
Zelensky revealed that Ukraine and the US are close to finalizing an agreement granting Washington access to Ukrainian natural resources in exchange for security assistance. He described the potential deployment of US troops in Ukraine as a logical step given the country’s security concerns.
While expressing optimism about ongoing negotiations, he cautioned that $15 billion in previously pledged US military aid remains undelivered.
Hesitation Over US Minerals Deal
Reports indicate that Zelensky is hesitant to sign a controversial minerals deal with Trump, which could see Ukraine giving away billions in critical resources and revenues. A Ukrainian source told Daily Mail that the draft agreement contains “problematic issues” and lacks balanced commitments between both countries.
In a televised address on Friday, Zelensky hinted at progress, stating, “This is an agreement that can strengthen our relations, and the key is to work out the details to ensure its effectiveness.”
Trump also expressed confidence, saying, “We’re signing an agreement, hopefully in the next fairly short period of time.” However, the terms remain unclear, with reports suggesting Trump is pushing for $500 billion worth of minerals in exchange for continued military support.
