Tax Reforms Will Empower 36 States, LGAs For Development – FG

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the benefits of the ongoing national debate on the tax reform bills.

Speaking yesterday, Idris emphasized the reforms’ potential to channel resources toward critical infrastructure, such as healthcare, education, transportation, digital technology, and social investments, ensuring no Nigerian is left behind.

The proposed reforms have drawn mixed reactions, with some applauding the initiative and others expressing reservations.

Idris reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to acting in the best interests of Nigerians, describing the nationwide dialogue asbd true reflection of democracy in action.

He urged all participants to maintain respectful and constructive engagement, avoiding divisive rhetoric or misinformation about the reforms.

“These fiscal reforms are not designed to impoverish any state or region. Instead, they aim to bring relief to millions of hardworking Nigerians and position our states and local governments for sustainable growth and development,” Idris stated.

He added that the reforms would allocate more resources to state and local governments, fostering a democracy that directly benefits the people.

The minister also dispelled concerns about a rushed process, assuring that President Tinubu has instructed the Ministry of Justice and relevant stakeholders to collaborate with the National Assembly to address any genuine concerns.

Idris described the reforms as some of the most impactful fiscal changes in decades. He highlighted the inclusion of a 2023 Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, which will empower the tier of government closest to the people.

“These reforms will not impose additional tax burdens but will enhance revenue collection and enable citizens to demand greater accountability in resource management across all levels of government,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to policies that eliminate inefficiencies and safeguard public resources, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda for a prosperous Nigeria.
