Students’ Union urges Tinubu To  Address Economic, Security, other challenges

By Charles Ayodele

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of its National Congress held on Saturday, 1st June, 2024 at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State.

It expressed concern over the current situation of things in the country, but commended the Federal Government and NELFUND Management for initiating the Students’ Loan Scheme. The union urged the inclusion of state-owned institutions to ensure all students have access to education, fostering academic growth and national development.

Also, the students’ body appreciated the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for increasing subventions to state-owned tertiary institutions and government’s continued support for free compulsory primary and secondary education.

It also applauded the state government for renovating public secondary schools through the World Bank Assisted (AGILE) project and for distributing learning aids like Starlink, 5G Airtel, Smart Boards, and  necessary stationery.

FESSU equally condemned the misconduct of security personnel, especially the illegal raids, harassment, and extortion of students in Ekiti State. It therefore called on security heads to address these issues by  preventing conflicts, ensuring law and order.

However, the Congress has resolved to sensitize students on Police-Citizen relationships and inform them about the ongoing plans to set up a legal panel to offer free legal support to students facing brutality or abuse.
