Reps Direct NCC to Block Pornographic Websites in Nigeria

The resolution, passed on Tuesday, also directed the NCC to compel internet service providers to enforce the restriction, with penalties for non-compliance.

The motion was sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that cyber pornography had become a global concern, and Nigeria had not done enough to curb its spread.

Tafoki noted that Nigeria, as a “highly religious country,” upholds moral values that discourage nudity and obscenity. He also pointed out that several countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East had enacted laws banning pornography.

Citing warnings from psychologists and sociologists, the lawmaker stated that pornography could contribute to issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction, with negative psychological and social consequences.

Following a voice vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the adoption of the motion, directing the NCC to take immediate action to enforce the ban.
