The ancient city of Oyo came alive yesterday as residents celebrated the arrival of their new monarch, Oba Abimbola Owoade, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. His homecoming followed the presentation of his instruments of office by Governor Seyi Makinde.
Oba Owoade’s ascension comes over two years after the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, and his arrival was marked with grand celebrations that reflected the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
To prepare for the monarch’s reception, major markets, including the historic Akesan Market, were temporarily closed. Residents and visitors lined the streets, eager to catch a glimpse of the new Alaafin. The vibrant atmosphere featured traditional attire, drumming, and dancing, showcasing the town’s deep cultural pride.
The monarch, who arrived in a black G-Wagon at 1:50 p.m., was received at Owode by prominent indigenes, with heavy security provided by Operation Burst, the Police, Civil Defence, and Amotekun.
Upon his arrival, Oba Owoade proceeded to the traditional rites required of an Alaafin designate. According to custom, he will enter a 21-day seclusion period, after which his official coronation will take place.
Speaking about the market closures, the Iyaloja of Oyo, Alhaja Adijat Bakare, said the decision was in line with tradition. “This is a historic occasion for us, and it is important to honor our monarch in accordance with our customs,” she said.
Expressing their excitement, market women described Oba Owoade as a unifying figure and a symbol of hope for the town. “We are thrilled to welcome a monarch who represents our values and traditions. His reign is expected to bring peace and prosperity to Oyo,” Alhaja Bakare added.
High Chief Mukaila Afonja, the Baba Iyaji of Oyo and head of the princes, emphasized the town’s support for the new monarch. “The people of Oyo have shown their acceptance by coming out in large numbers to celebrate this historic moment,” he said.
Chief Afonja, whose role includes processing applications for the Alaafin stool, confirmed that Oba Owoade was among those who formally applied for the position. He called on the new monarch to embrace all interests and forgive past grievances, urging him to embody the spirit of unity and fatherhood.
The week-long celebrations will continue with cultural events designed to strengthen community bonds and honor the new Alaafin’s reign, ushering in a new chapter for the historic Oyo Kingdom.
