A Nigerian-American, Mrs. Victoria Ogunremi, has been widely commended for returning $5,700 she discovered in the restroom of her workplace in New Jersey, United States.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a phone interview on Monday, Mrs. Ogunremi said her decision to return the money was driven by concern for the person who misplaced it. The act of honesty has earned her accolades from her employer, colleagues, and the owner of the money.
“The thought of the pain or trauma the loss could cause inspired me,” she explained. “I did not hesitate to return it because of my Christian faith and beliefs. Honesty brings peace of mind, and it is a virtue I hold dearly.”
Mrs. Ogunremi revealed that she first traced the owner of the money before notifying the management of her organization. She noted that her colleagues admired the gesture, with many describing her act as reflective of her character.
“The management was very pleased and proud of me, while the owner was incredibly grateful and showered me with words of appreciation,” she said. “They remarked that only someone with the fear of God could display such kindness.”
Reflecting on her upbringing, Ogunremi credited her late father for instilling strong moral values in her. “My father always taught us never to take what does not belong to us,” she said. “These principles have guided me all my life, and I hope to pass them on to my children and grandchildren.
“Whether someone is watching or not, doing the right thing matters. A good name is priceless, and peace of mind is invaluable. No matter how tough your situation may be, always return what is not yours. The rewards of integrity outweigh material gain.”
Mrs. Ogunremi’s action has been hailed as a shining example of honesty and compassion, demonstrating the importance of integrity even in challenging circumstances.
