Govt, Development Partners To Tackle Flood In Ekiti

By Teniola Blessing.

As Ekiti State Government in collaboration with Development Partners embark on channelisation and some erosion works in some towns in Ekiti State, a call has gone to residents to shun the habit of building on water ways as it portends great danger for all.

Akinyemi.

The call was made in Ado-Ekiti by the State Project Coordinator of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, Ekiti State, Dr Akinyemi Akinyugha.

Statement by the Ekiti State, NEWMAP Communication Officer, Mr. Rotimi Feyisina says,  Akinyugha while on site visit to some areas that may witness the intervention of the Government in Ado-Ekiti charged residents to always have future occurrences in sight while constructing buildings, stating that no one can hinder water from finding it’s ways; and so, anyone building on water ways will not only be endangering his life, he will be constituting dangers to other residents around.

He therefore emphasized that all hands must be on deck to checkmate anyone toying with the idea of flouting the environmental laws while constructing, saying such persons should be reported to the concerned agencies.

He promised the readiness of the Biodun Oyebanji led administration to intervene in areas requiring help to combat erosion and flood before another rainy season, noting that plans were on top gear to partner with International bodies for the purpose.

Earlier, some residents in Ifesowapo, Better life, Ado-Ekiti and other axis, including Pastor Matthew Okwuazo appealed to the Government to come to their aids in tackling the perennial flood and erosion disaster. A young man, Taiwo Adewole noted that he lost millions of naira as his fishpond was washed away by erosion not long ago and therefore called for speedy intervention by the State Government.
