The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of DStv and GOtv, to maintain its current subscription rates while an ongoing investigation into its planned tariff hike continues.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu.
The directive comes after MultiChoice requested an extension for its scheduled appearance before the commission over concerns regarding its repeated price increases. While the request was granted, FCCPC has now fixed March 6, 2025, for the hearing, mandating the company’s CEO and other relevant officials to provide a comprehensive response.
“As part of this directive, MultiChoice is expressly instructed to maintain the existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending the commission’s review and final decision,” the statement read.
The commission emphasised that the price freeze is necessary to protect consumers from potential exploitation during the investigation.
Earlier, FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice’s CEO to appear on February 27 for an investigative hearing. However, the company had already informed its customers of a planned price adjustment, citing the need to sustain its operations and deliver quality content.
Under the proposed new rates, the DStv Compact package would see an increase, while Compact Plus and Premium bouquets would remain at N30,000 and N44,500, respectively.
MultiChoice, in a notice titled “Price Adjustments for DStv and GOtv Packages,” had notified customers that the changes would take effect from March 1, 2025.
