Edo Governor Swears In Three Judges Rejected By Obaseki

The newly appointed judges—Justice Ojo Maureen Osa, Justice Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Justice Edoghogho Eboigbe—were sworn into the Edo State High Court, marking a significant development in the state’s judiciary.

Governor’s Commitment to Justice

During the ceremony, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding the principles of fairness and the separation of powers.

“In my inaugural speech on November 12, 2024, I emphasized the critical role of the judiciary under the doctrine of Separation of Powers. Today, we are strengthening that role,” the governor said.

He highlighted the delay in the judges’ appointments, noting that while the NJC had recommended eight candidates in June 2023, only five were sworn in by the previous administration.

“Eleven months after the NJC’s recommendation, three judges were still left out, despite being cleared and recommended. Today, we have the privilege to right that wrong,” he stated.

The governor charged the judges to uphold the highest standards of conduct, ensure fair dispute resolution, protect citizens’ rights, and bring offenders to justice.

“For me, no one should be discriminated against, marginalized, or hated for personal reasons or for not having a godfather,” Okpebholo emphasized.

Judges Respond

Speaking on behalf of the new appointees, Justice Ojo Maureen Osa expressed gratitude to the governor for making their swearing-in a reality.

“We thank you for this opportunity to serve and for making this day possible just three weeks into your tenure. We assure you that we will dispense justice without fear or favour,” she said.

Justice Osa also prayed for the success of Governor Okpebholo’s administration, pledging their dedication to advancing justice in Edo State.

Strengthening the Judiciary

The swearing-in ceremony underscores Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to addressing issues in Edo State’s judiciary and ensuring that qualified individuals have the opportunity to serve without undue interference. The appointments are expected to enhance the administration of justice and restore confidence in the state’s judicial system.
