Don Advocates Media Independence To Boost Economic Development

Professor Aborisade made the emphasis

While giving his remarks at the 1st Public Lecture/Treasure Newspaper Distinguished Personality Award 2024, with the theme: “Home Grown Economy As A Road Map For Economic Sustainability: Examining The Prospects Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration” held at the Solab Suites Hotel, FUTA South Road, Akure, Ondo State on Saturday, the 27th of April, 2024.

He said media independence is vital for economic development as it allows for free flow of information, promotes innovation and fosters a culture of transparency and accountability.

While lamenting the current media landscape, the don noted that the media is marred by government interference, censorship and bias, which hinders the ability of journalists to report truthfully and hold those in power accountable.

Prof. Aborisade stated that independent media outlets, funded by non-government sources, publish helpful messages and promote accountability.

He urged journalists to respect the public and chart a path that defends the people, places the people above the government and defends the truth.
