Court Remands Ex-Speaker, One Other For Fraud, Attempt Murder, Others In Ekiti

An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of former Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dele Olugbemi and Tajero Adebayo at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti for committing offence of conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder and others.

The charge reads that Olugbemi Dele (48) and Tajero Adebayo (42) on 24/02/23 around 7:00 p.m and 31/05/23 around 10:30 p.m within Ado Ekiti Mgisterial District, reasonably suspected to have committed offence of conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder and threatening violence on one Chief Ogunyemi Aluko and one other.

According to the charge, the offences are punishable under Section 421, 329 (1) (a), 241 (a) and 46 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

In his statement to the Police, one of the victims Chief Ogunyemi Aluko said, I am a factional leader of the Oodua People’s Congress in Ekiti State, Hon. Ougbemi collected a sum of N400, 000 from me in pretence of recruiting eighty (80) of my members into the Western Security Network, code named Amotekun at N5,000 per member but none of them was shortlisted into the corps, when I requested for refund of my money, he started using his former office to threaten to deal with me. On 31/5/23 he came to my house with four boys that armed with gun, cutlass and broken bottle around 10:30 p.m, I was beaten mercilessly and sustained injuries on my body and forehead before I narrowly escaped.

The Police prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leramo said, the duplicate case file have been sent to office of Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, he urged the court to remand the defendants at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti pending issuance of Legal Advise.

In his ruling, Magistrate Saka Afunso said, the defendants are hereby ordered to be remanded at Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti pending the Director of Public Prosecutions Legal Advise.

The case has been adjourned till 3rd July, 2023 for mention.
