The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has ruled out any alliance or merger with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday during a meeting with the party’s state executive, Adebayo dismissed claims that the SDP was an extension of the APC. He insisted that the party remains independent and committed to the welfare of Nigerians.
“Maybe APC has appendicitis; they should go to the hospital to cure it. We are a strong party, older than many others. Our mission is clear—we are not in government with them,” he said.
Adebayo, who was accompanied by former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and SDP chairmen from Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos, emphasized that his party remains focused on progressive policies.
“The problems of Nigeria can only be solved by investing in education, housing, healthcare, and infrastructure—what Chief Obafemi Awolowo called ‘a life more abundant,’” he stated.
While welcoming new members, he made it clear that only individuals who align with the party’s vision would be accepted. “We are merging with the Nigerian people, not with those who oppress them,” he said.
Ogun SDP Chairman, Ola Williams, also used the occasion to welcome genuine entrants into the party, reaffirming its commitment to justice and progress.
