PDP Leaders Meet Obasanjo Over 2027 Elections

The meeting, which held on Saturday at Obasanjo’s penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, was led by the party’s factional National Chairman, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, SAN. The closed door engagement lasted about 40 minutes.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Ini Ememobong, the former president charged the PDP leadership to entrench discipline as the foundation for rebuilding the party and safeguarding its future. According to him, Obasanjo warned that indiscipline could destroy any political organisation, no matter how strong.

Ememobong said the meeting focused on the state of the nation, the condition of democracy and the internal affairs of the party, adding that the PDP leadership assured Obasanjo of its commitment to restoring order, unity and internal discipline within the party.

Those present at the meeting included the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara; National Secretary and former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja; former Niger State Governor, Alhaji Babangida Aliyu; former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah Jang; as well as other party leaders.

Speaking after the meeting, Turaki said the visit was to seek Obasanjo’s guidance and support as the party prepares for what he described as a difficult but achievable task of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

He described Obasanjo as a respected elder statesman whose experience in building democratic institutions remains valuable to the PDP. Turaki said the discussions inspired the party leadership and strengthened its belief that returning to power in 2027 is possible.

The former minister said the PDP was already preparing the ground for its comeback, adding that the party would reclaim power in Ekiti and Osun states as part of its rebuilding process.

Turaki declared that the party was battle ready for the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigerians were tired of what he described as incompetence and maladministration under the APC led Federal Government.

Addressing party members later at the Ogun State secretariat, Turaki urged PDP members across the country to support the new leadership, stressing that the era of impunity was over and that members would be allowed to freely support candidates of their choice during elections.

Also speaking, Arapaja and Wabara appealed to party members to remain united and intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of future elections.

The Ogun State Chairman of the party, Mr Abayomi Tella, said PDP members in the state were encouraged by the visit, noting that the party was ready to challenge the APC in 2027. He warned against voter intimidation, insisting that such practices would not be tolerated in future elections.

Tella said the 2027 election would be decided by the people, stressing that residents of Ogun State were determined to vote for better governance and accountability.
