Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has said his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress was driven by the need to place the state in the same political direction as President Bola Tinubu. He said the move was important to secure a smooth relationship with the federal government and keep the state on a stable development path.
At the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, the governor received his APC membership card from the state party chairman, Chief Tony Okocha. The short ceremony marked his full entry into the party, days after he publicly declared his decision to leave the PDP.
During the presentation, Fubara described his new political journey as a spiritual responsibility that aligns with the broader interest of Rivers people. He explained that the state cannot afford to take a position that contradicts the direction of the President at a time when collaboration is needed for major government programmes and projects.
According to the governor, the decision was taken to protect ongoing development efforts in the state and open the way for improved cooperation with the federal authorities. He said aligning with the President’s leadership would help unlock opportunities and secure long term growth for Rivers State.
Fubara thanked leaders of the APC for the reception given to him and promised to support the strengthening of the party ahead of future political activities. He assured Chief Okocha that the party’s structure in the state would be revived and maintained to meet its responsibilities.
The governor’s shift to the APC has introduced a fresh wave of political repositioning in the state as parties and stakeholders begin to prepare for the 2027 general elections.
