The United States Mission in Nigeria has restated its commitment to global anti-corruption efforts, warning that persons found guilty of corrupt practices may be denied entry into the US, regardless of their position or influence.
The Mission made this known in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday.
“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the post read.
In May 2023, Washington announced visa restrictions on certain individuals accused of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process during the last general elections.
At the time, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said in a statement published on the State Department website that the decision was part of America’s support for democracy in Nigeria and across the world.
“The United States is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Today, I am announcing that we have taken steps to impose visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections cycle,” Blinken said.
